Let's Talk Organic Gardening with Becky Martorelli, Master Gardener

Eleven years ago, I tore up a 4’x 4’ patch of grass in our front yard and planted my first raised bed. That summer, we feasted on Sungold tomatoes and cucumbers. The taste of the fresh veggies and the joy of watching them grow every day got me hooked on gardening. Each year, I added a new raised bed, then a fence, then a gravel reflexology walking path. Over those 11 years, I transformed our small and boring front yard into a front yard oasis. My garden has become a place for me to start my summer mornings with dirt and an occasional chat with a neighbor walking by. Growing our own veggies has been satisfying and empowering.

It has been exciting watching more and more people installing front-yard veggie gardens in my neighborhood. I love getting up early and walking around the neighborhood with Ollie (the family Bichon-poo) in the summer. We get to see what’s growing in the neighborhood. These gardens create a real connection to how our food is grown, and they create ways for us to connect as neighbors, too.

As spring is nearly upon us, I thought it would be a great idea to sit down with my long-time friend and Reflexology Client and talk to her about Organic Gardening. Becky Martorelli is a Master Gardener, and she knows a ton about organic gardening. I hope you enjoy the interview. Becky talks about what to plant, where to plant when to plant, and even things you can plant today (end of winter) to ensure a great crop this year.
